Overview
The ACM Designing Interactive Systems Conference (DIS) 2025 will be held in Funchal, Madeira from July 5-9, 2025. The conference encourages submissions that address its five contribution areas: Critical Computing and Design Theory, Design Methods and Processes, Artifacts and Systems, Research Through Design, and AI and Design. Submissions related to the conference theme of “Designing for a Sustainable Ocean” are particularly welcome. DIS 2025 will be an in-person-only event, requiring authors to present their work in person.
DIS 2025: Call for Papers
We invite you to submit to ACM Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) 2025, taking place in Funchal, Madeira from July 5-9, 2025.
Conference Theme
DIS 2025 focuses on “Designing for a Sustainable Ocean”, urging us to rethink our relationship with the planet and its environments and oceans. This theme invites a critical examination of how oceans can inspire design that transcends human-centered perspectives, emphasizing ecological systems and our interconnectedness with all forms of life.
Contribution Areas
DIS 2025 welcomes submissions that address the design of interactive systems in the broadest possible sense, with a focus on the following five contribution areas:
- Critical Computing and Design Theory: Papers on critical computing, design theory, and their intersections, focusing on the political, ethical, and moral dimensions of computing.
- Design Methods and Processes: Papers documenting, innovating, and advancing methods, approaches, and processes in interaction design, UX design, and service design.
- Artifacts and Systems: Papers analyzing, evaluating, and reflecting on artifacts and interactive systems, particularly those supporting sustainable, equitable, and resilient outcomes.
- Research Through Design (RtD): Research contributions resulting from the exploration of design practices, materials, artifacts, technologies, and interfaces through iterative, hands-on engagement.
- AI and Design: Papers making a design contribution to artificial intelligence, including design for AI, design with AI, and design of AI agents and robots.

Broader Impact
All submissions will be assessed based on their broader impact on society and/or the environment. Authors are encouraged to discuss the significance of their work beyond a narrow intellectual contribution.
Paper Length and Format
- Papers do not have a page limit; authors are encouraged to submit a length proportional to the contribution.
- Typical submissions are expected to be approximately 7,000–8,000 words excluding references, figure/table captions, and appendices.
- Submissions above 12,000 words or below 4,000 words may be desk-rejected.
- Papers must be formatted correctly using the provided templates.
- Microsoft Word Template
- LaTeX Template (Use sample-manuscript.tex for submissions)
- Overleaf (Latex)
Anonymization Policy
All submissions must be anonymized for review. Author and affiliation sections and credits must be left blank. Citations to previous work should be unanonymized and cited in the third person. A detailed anonymization policy can be found here.
Policy on Use of Large Language Models (LLMs)
Text generated from LLMs must be clearly marked. Please refer to the April 2023 ACM Policy on Authorship for guidance.
Policy on Research Involving Human Participants and Subjects
All research involving human subjects must go through the appropriate ethics review requirements applicable to the authors' research environment. A short note to reviewers providing this context is required.
Review Process
Each paper will receive detailed reviews from two external reviewers and a secondary Associate Chair (AC). The primary AC will write a meta-review summarizing the reviews and providing a recommendation. Final acceptance decisions will be made by the Program Committee.
Upon Acceptance
- Authors will be notified of conditional acceptance or rejection by 8th April 2025.
- Accepted papers require a camera-ready submission by 22nd April 2025.
- Presenting authors must attend the conference in person. Papers whose authors do not present may be withdrawn from the ACM Digital Library.
- Accepted submissions may be asked to prepare a short teaser video.
- A full conference registration fee is required for each presenting author.
